A high performance X-ray photoelectron spectrometer - a Kratos Axis Ultra - has been funded by the EPSRC for research in materials science in the Manchester area. The project is a collaboration between five departments, the Corrosion and Protection Centre, Department of Textiles and Paper, School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science (Manchester University) and Chemistry and Nanotechnology (Salford University).
The Axis Ultra DLD instrument was installed in March 2002. This is a fully automated system with radial distribution chamber (equipped with a glove box and other facilities for in situ sample preparation) and microscope sample locator. The Ultra is capable of both spectroscopy and real time imaging XPS using two independent analysers and features monochromatic aluminium and dual anode (Mg/Al) excitation.
